HP printer 670c and windows95 : failing bi-directional communication, using 'ecp' ( parallel port as 'enhanced capabilities port' ). main problem: nonsense error messages it took me 2 weeks to get this printer working properly. hp helped only as far as 'the printer is not the problem'. ( mainbord: chaintech 5TDM2 chipset: intel 430tx bios: award 04/21/98 windows version: 'osr2' ) this is how i finally got it right: prepare: windows95 software hp software ( floppies or from the net ) 'ieee 1284' - printer cable ( i still do not know if this cable is crucial, the difference with a normal cable is small ) --- the cleaning part: remove printer(s) from control-panel/printers delete manually all hp-software ( all files starting with hp.. ) from windows- and system- directories (or move it somewhere if you are not sure) remove lpt1-port in device-manager ( ! ) switch computer and printer off --- the building part: put cable in place start computer, go in bios setup look for 'integrated peripherals', lpt1 select ecp ( 'enhanced capabilities port' ) save + exit windows starts, finds new hardware: 1: the port: select the driver manually, look on the windows cd: drivers/prntr/lpt there is: lpt.vxd, version ....503? do not take the one in the 'cabs' ( version ....950? ). (windows is vague here about the driver, it says: 'no driver needed or loaded' or so.) 2: the printer: tell it where the software is. now it should work. jasper, amsterdam 9904 PS oops, it did not. disabled bi-directional communication via the hp-configuration program. i hope the thing keeps working now, but it is not what i call 'working properly'. if anybody has some answers... PS2 it did not. the answer is: keep calling hp-support until they give you a replacement. we did it as a team: the owner to talk to the management and me to talk to the technical people. prepare for some hours on the telephone. i still would love to know what really happpens, i suspect the contacts of the cartridges. feedback: rjnoe@xs4all.nl
